WEATHER DOESNT STOP MEMBERS FROM TRAINING

Even on a rainy day the members found some time to review Drafting and Pump Operations with Recruit Plato of ENGINE Co. 5 - A Shift. Both Career and Volunteer Members enjoyed the opportunity to review their drafting and pumping principals and skills. The spare folding tank was deployed in the Engine Bay and filled via a line stretched from the hydrant and members drafted from the tank, operated a siphon, reviewed relay operations and finally reviewed the deployment of the hydraulic water pump.

 
   
   
 
MULTI-ALARM HOSPITAL FIRE

Shortly after 0500 hrs. TANKER 5 was alerted to respond on the TANKER TASK FORCE to Carroll County in the 7900 block of Henryton Road. Units were on scene of a large three story, vacant hospital with FIRE SHOWING. TANKER 5 hauled multiple loads of water to support the water supply effort. With all of the area companies operating on the incident ENGINE Co. 51 was transferred to Company 3 and Company 5 was back filled with Tanker 11 and Montgomery County Engine 251. TANKER 5 operated on this incident for over 4 hours before returning to service.

 
   
 
ENGINE TRANSFER

Shortly after lunch BOX ALARM 1-6 was sounded for a BUILDING FIRE. With units from the first battalion operating on the fire; ENGINE 52 was transferred to Company 10’s quarters leaving another crew back to protect the first due. ENGINE 52 remained on the transfer for approximately 3.5 hours before returning home and responded to one incident located on Interstate 95.

 
   
 
SECOND ALARM APARTMENT FIRE

Just after 2000 hrs. the radio came alive with MUTUAL AIDE requests from MONTGOMERY COUNTY to assist them on a SECOND ALARM APARTMENT FIRE in Burtonsville. ENGINE Co. 51 was FIRST DUE on the Second Alarm and remained on scene for almost an hour. Company 5 maintained multiple crews throughout the incident duration.

 
   
 
SMALL FIRE IN THE 5-1 BOX

Shortly after lunch a BOX ALARM was struck for a reported house on fire in the 5900 blk. of Indian Summer Drive. COMPANY 5 responded with multiple crews bringing ENGINE Co. 51, 52, PARAMEDIC 55 and CHIEF 5A. Engine Co. 51 went on the scene of a two story, wood frame, single family, detached dwelling with smoke coming from the A-Alpha / B-Bravo corner of the structure. After a quick investigation it was discovered that a smoldering mulch bed fire had extended to the exterior of the garage. After companies quickly opened up and confirmed no fire spread to the interior of the home the alarm was reduced to COMPANY 5's units.

RESCUE ALARM 32-72

ENGINE Co. 51, RESCUE SQUAD 5, AMBULANCE 55, Tower 10, Paramedic 105, Battalion Chief 2 and EMS 2 all responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of west bound Rt. 32 just prior to Rt. 108. ENGINE Co. 51 arrived on location to find a rear end collision involving multiple cars. Upon RESCUE SQUAD 5’s arrival on location, command sent them to work extricating a single patient from a Ford Bronco. RESCUE SQUAD 5’s crew removed the roof of the vehicle and was assisted by Tower 10’s crew with the removal of a heavy patient. Paramedic 105 and Trooper 8 handled patient care while the companies picked up and returned to service.

 
   
   
 
COMPANY 5 TURNS OUT BIG FOR 7 BOX

Shortly before 1430 hrs. COMPANY 5 and others were alerted on BOX ALARM 7-52 in the 4800 blk. of Manor Lane for the reported house on fire. Engine 71 advised that they were out of position and ENGINE 52 would be the first in engine. COMPANY 5 responded immediately with ENGINE Co 52, RESCUE SQUAD 5, and TANKER 5. ENGINE Co 52 arrived on location to find a two story single family dwelling with nothing evident from Side A and SMOKE SHOWING from the basement on SIDE C. The Lt. from Engine 52 assumed the initial command and assigned the officer from RESCUE SQUAD 5 the FIRE ATTACK GROUP. ENGINE 52 and RESCUE SQUAD 5's crew entered the basement from a door on SIDE C and found a fire in the basement and extinguished the same. With the incident escalating it brought PARAMEDIC 55 on the TASK FORCE ALARM and ENGINE Co 51 on the SECOND ALARM. The fire was brought under control and Command held the units from Company 5 and 7 to finish up. UNITS ON SCENE: ENGINE Co. 51, ENGINE Co. 52, PARAMEDIC 55, RESCUE SQUAD 5, and TANKER 5.

PERSONNAL INJURY DURING 2ND ALARM

While units were working the fire in Engine 5's first due, a personal injury collision occured close to the fireground, sending Rescue 5 (Clarksville), Engine 101, and Paramedic 105 (Rivers Park) to the scene. Unit 4 (Balthis), responding on the second alarm as the on call deputy chief, arrived on the scene first and established the Clarksville Pike command. Paramedic 105 transported a priority 2 (serious) to Shock Trauma. Upon their return to service, Engine 101 then filled in at Engine 5 until approx. 02:30hrs to cover during the fire. FIRST DUE 2ND ALARM HOUSE FIRE

Shortly after 10 o'clock, Company 5 and others were alerted to a reported house fire in the 6500 block of Ocean Shore Ln., in Clarksville. The caller advised that the house across the street has fire going up the front of it. Multiple calls were being received all advising of the same. Communications was advised the house was under renovation and no one was living there. Engine 51 arrived to find the same with heavy fire showing. After the arrival of Tower 7 the elevated master stream was placed in service with several hand lines. This quickly brought the fire under control and the second alarm was released. Units stayed on the scene for approximately 3 and 1/2 hours mopping up.

RURAL WATER SUPPLY TRAINING

On Monday evening Tanker 5 headed out to the Laurel VFD to assist with rural water supply training along with Montgomery Tankers 17 and 4. Tanker 5 was there for the evening shuttling multiple loads of water while the Laurel members drafted and moved water.

RT 32/TEN OAKS RD

In the early afternoon of August 13, 2007, units from companies 3 and others were alerted to a personal injury on Route 32 at Ten Oaks Road in West Friendship. Engine 31, under the command of Capt. Doug Welsh, arrived to find a concrete pump truck that had rear ended a tractor trailer, resulting in the driver of the concrete pump truck being pinned in his vehicle. Rescue Squad 5, as well as Tower 10, were put to work to free the driver, who was classified as a priority 1 trauma. The Go Team from Shock Trauma was requested; however, after further evaluation of the entrapment and injuries, the request was cancelled. Trooper 3 (Frederick) transported the patient to an area trauma center. Unit 512 (Gouldin) established the command, and then transferred it to Battalion Chief 2 (Baker). Story from HcFire.com

MINOR EXTRICATION IN THE 5-04 BOX

After a brief shower came through the area Company 5 was alerted for the report of a personal injury accident in the area of Rt. 108 and Hall Shop Rd. Before the units could get on the street the call was upgraded with the report of 1 trapped. Squad 5 arrived on the scene first and found a Dodge pick up about 75 feet off the road and into a tree head on. The unbelted driver had been tossed about the cab and came to rest on the front floor board. Squad 5 stabilized the vehicle and deployed the Holmatro spreaders and cutters to remove the passenger door that had been caved in during the accident. Paramedic 55 then took over patient care and transported the patient priority 2 to HCGH. UNITS ON THE SCENE: SQ5, E51, P55, U5, BC2, EMS2, ME41, MM49

 
   
 
TRACTOR ROLL OVER 1 PINNED IN THE 5-02 BOX

Early this evening Company 5 was alerted for the report of a large lawn tractor over turned with 1 subject pinned in the 6700 blk of Guilford Rd. County Police arrived on scene and confirmed the same. Communications had already started the process for requesting the trooper for the fly out by the time CO. 5 arrived on the scene. Squad 5 arrived and reported 1 pinned and requested to keep the Trooper coming. It took the units approximately 15 mins to extricate the patient and load them in the ambulance. Paramedic 55 packaged the patient and transferred care to Trooper 8 who transported to Shock Trauma priority1. Units worked on the scene for just about an hour. It was estimated that the tractor weighed in at between 3-5 tons. UNITS ON SCENE: E52, P55, SQ5, CF5B, BC2, EMS1, TROOPER 8
